Helpful Referee Information

Julie Ilacqua, Managing Director of Referee Programs for US Soccer attended our recent USASA Region IV meeting. Julie emphasized the following points:

1. All sanctioned United State Soccer Federation games must be officiated using the standard Diagonal System of Control. One, three or four officials will be assigned to any USSF sanctioned match. Refer to page 36 of the Referee Administrative Handbook. The use of the dual system or two whistles on the field either intentionally or unintentionally is not sanctioned and therefore not covered by insurance.

2. The only uniform vendor that can be formally invited to a United State Soccer Federation (and by extension, your chapter) functions is Official Sports International. This is because OSI is our national sponsor and they put thousands of dollars into the referee development fund annually. Josh Wilkens is representative in Washington State. You can contact him at joshwilkens@yahoo.com.

3. On a state-wide assigning note, because of weather conditions some home teams may have to find fields that are outside their normal playing area. If that occurs, the home team association and the assignor they have appointed will be responsible for the assignment of officials to those matches. As an example, the Lake Washington Crossfire teams normally play at fields within the East King County assignor area. But, should their games be moved to Seattle, the EKCSRA-assigned officials will keep their assignment and move with the game.
